What is a UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) and how do I get one?

Modified on Thu, 11 Dec, 2025 at 4:14 PM

A UTR is a 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference that HMRC uses to identify you for Self Assessment and certain other tax records. You need a UTR before you can file a Self Assessment tax return online.

Getting a UTR

• You receive a UTR automatically when you register for Self Assessment as an individual, or when you set up a limited company.

• Register using the relevant HMRC online service for your situation.

• HMRC will post your UTR to your registered address, usually within about 15 working days in the UK and longer if you live overseas.

• Keep your UTR safe and do not share it unnecessarily.

Once you have your UTR and HMRC has activated online filing, you can enter the UTR in AbraTax and submit your return directly to HMRC.
