Why am I getting an "authentication failure" error when submitting?

Modified on Thu, 11 Dec, 2025 at 3:51 PM

An authentication failure error usually means your Government Gateway account is not configured correctly for Self Assessment on that UTR. In some cases HMRC have also linked it to issues such as password rules. AbraTax cannot see or fix your HMRC account, so you may need to speak directly to HMRC.

Details

• Often the UTR has not been properly activated for online filing in your Gateway account.

• Sometimes HMRC reject submissions for reasons only they can see, such as password rules.

• AbraTax staff cannot contact HMRC on your behalf or access your credentials.

• If you have tried again and still see the error, HMRC need to confirm what is wrong.
